Perchance to die

De professor groeit op in Palestina en Israël, studeert geschiedenis economie en politieke wetenschappen in Jeruzalem Basel en London. Van 1972 tot in 1996 doceert hij economie te Utrecht en schrijft na zijn pensionering onder de naam Y.S. Brenner.

• Zijn wetenschappelijke boeken en artikelen worden slechts door een handjevol mensen gelezen. Na pensionering was eindelijk tijd om te doen wat hij altijd graag wilde: thrillers schrijven. Het eerste boek was een grap, een uitgever vertelde vooral over seks en moord te schrijven. Deze onderwerpen verkopen goed, het tweede boek is serieuzer. Om de dingen te zeggen die hij graag kwijt wil, zijn de geesten van drie bekende kunstenaars opgeroepen: Frans Masereel, Rembrandt van Rijn en Edvard Munch. De titel is afgeleid van een citaat van Hamlet: To sleep perchance to dream. Toeval speelt in het boek een grote rol.

In het boek ontwaakt de ik-persoon in een Utrechts ziekenhuis: iemand heeft geprobeerd hem te vermoorden. Terwijl hij zich afvraagt waarom, worden zijn gedachten doorspekt met hallucinaties en verbeelde discussies met drie geesten. Het verhaal zelf is bijzonder bij de tijd, recente gebeurtenissen worden op de voet gevolgd en vele krantenartikelen verzameld. Het is de bedoeling dat de lezer over bepaalde onderwerpen gaat nadenken. Bijvoorbeeld over het mentaliteitsverschil in ontwikkelingslanden en de westerse wereld. Hoe buitenlanders geconfronteerd worden met de bureaucratie van een ander land. Er kunnen dingen gebeuren waarop de hoofdpersoon geen vat heeft. Je kunt wel honderd verklaringen bedenken, je komt er niet achter. Dit overkomt de hoofdpersoon van mijn boek. Hij gaat vrienden verdenken, niets klopt al lijkt het logisch. Voor het schrijven heeft de professor een vaste routine ontwikkeld: "Van half negen tot half twee schrijven. Ook zijn vrouw is dan bezig met schrijven. Na de lunch gaan ze altijd wandelen en lezen."

De auteur schrijft alleen in het engels: vertalen is zo duur. Het lezen van dit boek is zeker de moeite waard!

Story

The narrator wakes up in a hospital. Someone has tried to murder him, and he wonders who and for what reason. As he searches his mind, his thoughts are interspersed with hallucinations and imagined discussions with the ghosts of Frans Masereel, Rembrandt van Rijn and Edvard Munch. Gradually the narrator realises how little he really knows about his friends. At one stage he suspects that his friendship with a swiss aviation-electronics expert may have led arabs to believe that he has contacts with the israeli secret services. Later he suspects a zürich banker who may believe that he knew things he wanted to keep secret. After this he suspects that a third friend, with contacts in the arab emirates and malaysia, has brought the wrath of the al-qaeda network upon him. After a second attempt on his life in the hospital, he begins to suspect that a trip with his friend to a firm in Almelo, where abdul qadeer khan started his career of providing pakistan, lybia, iran and north korea with nuclear know-how and technology, may have been the likely cause of his predicament.

Story

When Jan inadvertently witnesses an assassination in his street, he is drawn into a recondite world of subterfuge and violence. Gangsters and arms dealers, who erroneously believe that he had dealings with the murdered man, beset him. The former wanted him to hand over a list of swiss bank accounts and the latter to supply them with equipment the dead man had promised to provide. He can do neither, and the protection the police are able to offer him is far from adequate. The dutch security service asks him to play along with the gangsters until they are caught. He reluctantly agrees. Then the CIA wants him to keep up the pretense of being able to supply the arms dealers with the equipment they are waiting for. He refuses, but becomes willy nilly involved in this as well. In the process, he falls in love with a reporter, whom he first met soon after the assassination he had witnessed. Being a mathematician working in a physics department, he could never shake off the feeling that during all his adventures he was like Schrödinger's cat, alive and dead at one and the same time.
